Ahead of the Game uses sport to teach young players, parents, and coaches how to talk about mental health. The programme reviews how to recognise mental health issues, what to do and when to get help. Young players learn how to build resilience and overcome challenges in sport and life.
- Ahead of the Game was designed and led by the University of Wollongong (NSW, Australia) and the results of its control trial demonstrated both meaningful efficacy and further, that the program carries no risk of doing any harm. We believe it’s now the most evidenced sports based mental health programme in the World, with more than 18 studies published and more to come.
- But, it doesn’t just work in theory. Delivery programs undertaken in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand so far have shown that the AOTG programme, when effectively implemented within a community sport setting, resulted in significant and clinically meaningful decreases in psychological distress, and equivalent increases in wellbeing and resilience among adolescents.
